In January 2026, the Convene team hosted a community conversation at a local methadone clinic, creating space for open and honest dialogue with people currently accessing substance use services in Travis County. Throughout the day, we heard from 19 individuals who shared their experiences, perspectives, and priorities related to care, recovery, and system navigation.
Participants reflected on what is working well, what services are most needed, and where critical gaps remain. Many emphasized the value of the ability to access multiple supports in one location, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT), mental health services, and other medical care. This integrated approach was described as essential for maintaining stability and reducing barriers to ongoing engagement.
Alongside these strengths, participants also highlighted ongoing challenges related to access, coordination, and continuity of care. Several noted that navigating multiple systems and appointments can be overwhelming, particularly for individuals managing complex health and life circumstances. These insights reinforced the importance of building more connected, responsive, and person-centered service models.
The perspectives shared during this session will play an important role in guiding Convene’s ongoing work. By centering the voices of people with lived experience, Convene continues to strengthen its understanding of how systems can better support individuals and communities across Travis County.
