Southeast Branch Library Community Conversation

Southeast Branch Library Community Conversation

In February 2026, the Convene team hosted a community conversation at the Southeast Branch Library, creating space for community members to share experiences and perspectives related to substance use services, access to resources, and navigating support systems in Travis County. Participants shared thoughtful reflections and lived experiences that highlighted important themes around communication, access, and connection.

Participants discussed challenges related to navigating services and understanding available resources. Several shared experiences of confusion around insurance coverage and service eligibility, including changes in coverage and situations where medical complications created barriers to receiving care. Others described difficulties understanding systems and services, noting that people are sometimes connected to programs or resources without fully understanding what they are receiving or how systems work together.

The conversation also highlighted the role relationships and communication play in accessing support. One person described how younger people may feel judged by adults and family members when discussing substance use and emphasized the need for more education and support for families. Participants noted that feelings of judgment can make it more difficult to seek help, ask questions, or build trust with systems and providers.

Access barriers extended beyond substance use services themselves. Transportation challenges, staffing shortages, and long wait times were recurring concerns. Participants shared frustrations with inconsistent transportation schedules, delays in hearing back from programs and services, and situations where limited staffing or capacity prevented people from receiving timely support.

At the same time, participants identified many strengths and resources within the community. Libraries, healthcare locations, food resources, transportation supports, and workforce programs were all highlighted as valuable assets. Participants emphasized that services feel most accessible when resources are located close together, communication is clear, and staff create welcoming environments.

Community members also shared ideas for improving the system, including creating a central hub where individuals could access multiple services in one place, such as healthcare, employment support, food resources, and childcare. Participants also discussed the potential value of a single phone number or navigation system that could help connect people to essential resources and support.

The insights shared during this conversation continue to reinforce the importance of designing systems that are easier to understand, easier to navigate, and more responsive to the realities people experience every day.
